Prague State Opera description
The State Opera, near Wenceslas Square, also belongs on the list of exceptional places. Today plays, opera, and ballet are all on the bill. Originally a German theatre for operas and operettas, it opened to great fanfare in 1888. Architects Fellner and Helmer put together the plans for this Neo-Renaissance gem. The theatre recalls a number of acclaimed artists: Alexander Zemlinský, the conductor, composer, and director from 1911-1927, Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss, Lilli Lehman, and others. In May of 1945 it was seriously damaged by bombing, and was later reopened after massive reconstruction. It has been called the State Opera since 1992. © Prague.biz
