Strahov Gallery description
A historical crowd-pleaser.The fine artwork contained within the gallery ranges from the 14th to 19th century and much was donated by the nobility, the most noteworthy of whom was Charles IV. In the 19th century it was fashionable to be regarded as cultured and so dozens of ladies and gentlemen crowded the rooms to admire the renowned collection. In the 1950s the Communists removed many of the pieces, although most have since been returned. The collection comprises of mostly Czech and Central European Gothic paintings and wooden altarpieces. Italian artwork is also featured, as are 17th - 18th century Dutch items. Amongst those represented are Baroque artists such as J.J. Hering, P. Brandl, and the Rudolfin stylists B. Sprangler and J. Heintz. There are many other interesting pieces of art, such as fine depictions of scenes from the Bible and idealised paintings of the executions of important Catholic saints, such as St. Barbara, catching the moment before each saints' death. Don't miss this exhibition, it is quite unique! © Prague.biz
